Meet the Tin Lizzie

Meet the Tin Lizzie

Contrary to popular belief, not every Model T was black. During the first few years of production, Ford’s famous Tin Lizzie was available in almost any color except black. It was only after 1914 that customers could order “any color so long as it is black.” While some claimed that black paint dried faster, history suggests it was an efficiency change because black paint was cheaper and more durable. In addition, it helped boost production rates because it could be easily applied by almost anyone, as it doesn’t require as much detailing and precision as other colors.
